Japan launches ambitious 175 billion-parameter language model project

In a strategic move to bolster its presence in the global AI arena, Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), in collaboration with the Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) and the National Institute of Informatics (NII), is embarking on a groundbreaking large-scale language model initiative. Under the agreement, NII’s LLM research team, LLM-jp is tasked with creating a native language model, beginning with 175 billion parameters in its initial configuration. This undertaking, which is ten times larger than LLM-jp’s previous models, is equivalent in scale to OpenAI’s GPT-3, introduced in 2020.
