Playing a follower role in the 2G era, China-based IC designers achieved some breakthroughs in the 3G era and enhanced their presence further in the 4G sector before realizing certain self-sufficiency in developing communications chips in the 5G era. This has resulted in the rise of the local communication chip industry and the proliferation of some industry leaders such as Unisoc, HiSilicon Technologies, and ZTE Communications.
