China-based display panel maker BOE Technology recently made an investment in Chinese smartphone vendor Honor, a partnership that industry observers say will allow the former to increase handset-use OLED panel shipments and the latter to secure panel supply.

Japan-based Mazda Motor unveiled its three-phase electrification strategy on November 22. The automaker will begin with strengthening technology development and possibly invest in battery production later. Moreover, it aims to grow the share of EV sales to between 25-40% in 2030.

With Foxconn’s latest announcement to invite Shang-Yi Chiang, TSMC veteran and former SMIC executive, as the chief strategy officer of its semiconductor group, some in the industry perceive the decision more driven by Foxconn’s need for brand recognition, network expansion and overall strategic guidance, rather than the need for a technological upgrade, especially when there remains a significant gap between TSMC and Foxconn that can be hard to address in the short term.
