Chip supply becomes ever more critical as US defense industry wakes up to new geopolitical challenge

WIth the passages of the Chips and Science Act, momentum is gaining traction in the United States to re-shore semiconductor manufacturing, as leading industry players like Intel and Micron announce new investments on domestic manufacturing capabilities one after another. For the US, experiences from the chip shortage crisis from the past two years have elevated supply chain to become a critical national security issue, in the sense that not only automotive and consumer electronics industries were hurt – the US defense industry felt the pinch as well.

TSMC’s Mark Liu wants TSIA members to ‘rest assured and focus on Taiwan’

Chairman of TSMC Mark Liu, also the chairman of Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association (TSIA), said in the association’s 2022 annual conference on October 19 that “people should focus on developing Taiwan’s semiconductor industry and rest assured”, while acknowledging the fact that external pressure from the US-China trade war and the tension across the Taiwan strait has brought severe challenges to all industries, including the semiconductor industry itself.
