China smartphone industry – 2Q 2022
According to Digitimes Research’s statistics and analyses, with sales in China remaining sluggish and rising inflation dampening consumer spending in overseas markets, China-based smartphone vendors’ channel inventory levels ran high and their shipments continued to decline in second-quarter 2022, amounting to 150 million units, down 5.2% from a quarter ago and 4.6% from a year ago.

Samsung 3nm node progresses as S Korea evaluates China exposure
Samsung Electronics officially began chip production using its latest 3nm Gate-All-Around (GAA) process node on June 30, and went on to celebrate the first shipment of GAA-based chips in July. Now, rumors have surfaced that Samsung’s second-generation GAA process, 3GAP (3nm Gate-All-Around Plus), will begin volume production in 2023-2024.

ITRI, Tron-e co-develop lane-keeping assistance system for electric buses
Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and electric bus maker Tron Energy Technology (Tron-e) have co-developed a lane-keeping assistance system (LKAS) for use in electric buses, which will be promoted to Southeast Asia markets apart from being incorporated into Taiwan-made vehicles, according to ITRI sources.

PCB drill bit maker Topoint sees flat performance for 3Q22
Taiwan-based Topoint Technology, dedicated to supplying PCB drill bits and drilling services, expects its third-quarter revenues to see a flat sequential growth at best, as most of its clients continue to adjust inventories amid sluggish terminal market demand and remain conservative about sales prospects in the peak season, according to company sources.

DRAM bit growth to reach 14% in 2023, says TrendForce
Global DRAM bit production is forecast to rise 14.1% in 2023, but growth on the demand side will grow only 8.3%, according to TrendForce. It may be the first time DRAM demand bit growth will come below 10%, said the market research firm.
