STMicroelectronics to invest in Italian fab, aiming to source 40% of SiC in-house by 2024

The Switzerland-based STMicroelectronics (ST) is to invest EUR730 million (approx. US$716 million) over the next five years to build a silicon carbide (SiC) fab in Italy – its first SiC fab in Europe. The fab is scheduled to enter production in 2023. Financial Times reported that the project would receive EUR292 million in EU state aid, but the aid from the Italian government remains unclear.

EV market scale to top US$2.0 trillion, says UMC honorary vice chair John Hsuan

The market scale for electrical vehicles (EV) is estimated to top US$2.0 trillion, and Taiwan will surely play an important role in the global EV market by 2025 with its production value estimated to reach NT$600 billion (US$18.96 billion), according to John Hsuan, vice honorary chairman of United Microelectronics (UMC) and chairman of Clientron, a specialist in automotive electronic control system integration.
